Is the Recession Hurting Your Health?

The news tells us that the recession is deeper than initially thought. This certainly is not good news for many of us. Gas prices remain high, unemployment is high and good jobs are hard to find. These are typically the first things that come to mind when thinking about a recession and its impact.

But, there are other effects often tied to economic downturns that we don't often consider. How about your health? Is it suffering because of the economy?

Consider some of the main factors contributing to disease and illness. Stress and poor nutrition are among the leaders. Certainly, one's stress level goes up when economic times are harder. Worries about bills, how to make the mortgage or rent payment, keeping enough gas in the car to get to work, if you have a job, are all stress points.

Stress causes depletion of essential vitamins and minerals faster than normal. The effects include worsening immune system function (this can be especially problematic for those with chronic illnesses such as HIV/Aids) and elevated blood pressure leading to a variety of potential health risks including, abnormal heart beat, heart attacks, hardening of the arteries and coronary heart disease.

Other problems aggravated or caused by stress are muscle pains, low fertility, erectile dysfunction, complications during pregnancy, stomach problems (ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, reflux, etc.), weight gain and increased menstrual pain. Stress even worsens acne, psoriasis and the symptoms related to asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Stress leads to more out of pocket expenses for doctors, hospitals and prescriptions. Factor in potential lost wages and the stress factor easily becomes an out-of-control snowball further complicating our lives.

So, what is one to do to minimize or avoid this health "recession?" There are several very important components to overcoming stress.

Laugh. You've heard the saying that laughter is the best medicine. Laughter actually helps your body by reducing stress hormones, boosting the immune system, providing a cardio workout and increasing blood flow. As Mark Twain said, "He who laughs, lasts."

Exercise. Numerous studies support the health benefits of regular exercise. Improved cardiopulmonary function, reduced blood pressure, muscle tension release and mental relaxation are all known benefits. An important fact to remember about exercising is to pace oneself. Often times, people start out too fast and quickly burn out. Start out simple and gradually add a little every two or three days. Let your body "build" up its tolerance for physical exertion and you will be amazed at how quickly you are able to progress.

Nutrition. The typical American diet, even many so-called "healthy" diets, lacks key vitamins and minerals that our bodies require for optimum health. There are many, low-cost nutritional supplements that will help fill this void. They come in various forms, flavors and formulas to provide what your body needs. Proper nutrition is easy and very inexpensive when compared to the costs of medical care to treat illnesses and diseases due to poor nutrition.

Hobbies. Take up a hobby if you don't already have one. This occupies your mind with something fun and constructive and, as a result, actually helps your body function at a higher level.

Talk. Share your fears, concerns and passions with someone. The psychological and physical benefits will surprise many people. Just "getting it off of your chest" is very therapeutic and healthy. You will also likely find that you are not alone - many people share the same fears, concerns and passions and don't even realize it.

Be Positive. I wish there was a one-paragraph miracle remedy for this but, it takes a conscience effort. Even bad times can ultimately produce positive experiences if we choose to look for them. Our tendencies are to look at the bad and accept it but we can choose to seek the good out of a bad situation and focus our attention in a healthier place.

It is a widely accepted idea that some foods do more good to your body than others. In other words, some foods are "healthier" to eat than others. In this article, I set out to examine some of the natural nutrition sources that experts consider to be exceptionally "healthy" for your body. Remember, you are what you eat!

The Apricot is number one on my list. Apricots contain beta-carotene which helps to prevent free radical damage and gives protection to the eyes. An average sized apricot gives you 17 calories, 0 fats, and 1 gram of fiber. They may be eaten dried or soft.

Next, I'll strongly recommend the mango fruit. Accounting for approximately 50 percent of all tropical fruits produced worldwide, mango is one of the most extensively exploited fruits-for good reasons. A medium sized mango packs 57 mg of vitamin C-almost your entire daily dose. Considered a model "superfruit", it boosts your immune system and helps prevent arthritis.

The average sized cantaloupe contains 177 mg of vitamin C-almost twice your recommended daily dose. Half a melon contains approximately 853 mg of potassium, 97 calories, 1 gram of fat, and 2 grams of fiber. The potassium in the cantaloupe helps to lower blood pressure.

The World Health Organization (WHO) supports the use of onions for the treatment of poor appetite and to prevent atherosclerosis. Onion extracts are also recognized by the World Health Organization for providing relief in the treatment of coughs and colds, asthma and bronchitis.

Next in my vegetables list is broccoli. One cup of chopped broccoli contains 25 calories, 0 fats and 3 grams of fiber. Broccoli is rich in a wide array of nutrients with a substantial amount of vitamin C and beta-carotene. Half of the fiber in broccoli is soluble, and half insoluble, helping to meet your needs for both types of fiber. Broccoli belongs to the family of cruciferous vegetables-- which are known for reducing the risk of many types of cancer.

Spinach is recommended for its high calcium and iron content. In addition, spinach is an excellent source of vitamin K, vitamin A, manganese, magnesium, iron, vitamin C, vitamin B2, calcium, potassium, and vitamin B6. It is a very good source of dietary fiber, copper, protein, phosphorous, zinc, and vitamin E. This vegetable also contains omega-3 fatty acids in a fairly good proportion. The carotenoids in spinach helps fend of macular degeneration, which is a major cause of blindness in elderly people. One cup of spinach provides 7 calories, 0 fats and 1 gram of fiber.

In the "grains, beans and nuts" section, I'll choose to start with "peanuts". Peanuts, and other nuts, can lower your risk of heart disease by 20 percent. One ounce contains 166 calories, 14 grams of fats, and over 2 grams of fiber.

The pinto bean is another highly recommended potassium rich health food. Half cup of pinto beans provides more than 25 percent of your daily folate requirement, which protects you against heart disease. Half a cup gives 103 calories, 1 gram of fats, and 6 grams of fiber.

Skim milk is a great source of vitamin B2, which is important for good vision and, along with vitamin A, could protect against allergies. It also gives calcium and vitamin D. One cup contains 86 calories, 0 fats, and 0 fiber.

In the "seafood" category, the salmon is strongly recommended. Like all cold water fish, salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids have been proven to help reduce the risk of cardiac diseases. A 3 ounce portion of salmon contains 127 calories, 4 grams of fats, and 0 fiber. Two other great sources of omega-3 fatty acids in the "seafood" category are mackerel and tuna.

Multivitamin - Better Health?

Trying to incorporate healthier lifestyle changes often brings into question multivitamin use -- Should you take a daily multivitamin? Which of the many choices on the market is right for you? Fact is most Americans fall short of consuming many of the recommended nutrients necessary to maintain optimum health. Taking a basic daily multivitamin is a good preventive action. A separate calcium supplement is advisable unless you truly include 3 to 4 servings of dairy in your diet every single day.

A basic multivitamin is one that doesn't go beyond 100% of the recommended amount. What about super formulas that go beyond the RDAs? Taking a supplement that goes above and beyond 100% can introduce new health problems. You will be consuming more than the recommended safe upper limit. What about taking more than one supplement formulation? Let's say you start taking high dose multivitamin and also want to take a separate antioxidant formula. You would potentially be getting more than 10,000 IU for vitamin A exceeding it's safe upper limit and this is not even counting the amount of vitamin A naturally consumed in your diet. Studies have shown over supplementing with one antioxidant can cause health risks. Taking a high dose multivitamin with a prostate formula or immune boosting formula could put your consumption of zinc over 50 mg ultimately interfering with copper absorption resulting in a copper deficiency! Bottom line -- extra nutritional supplementation does not = better health!

Eating a healthy, well balanced diet is the best defense against nutritionally related diseases. Including a basic daily multivitamin is recommended. Antioxidants can help prevent diseases when they come from food sources, but not excessive amounts via supplements which can actually have the opposite effect. Remember -- Fresh is best!

Sleep and Diabetes

The Nurse's Health Study showed healthy women who reported getting less than five hours or more than nine hours sleep were more likely to develop diabetes in the next ten years than women who averaged seven to eight hours. As mentioned above, just three to four hours of sleep deprivation over the course of a few days can provoke metabolic changes that mimic a prediabetic state. The less you sleep, the more impaired you glucose tolerance and the greater your insulin resistance - a condition that often leads to Type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, as sleep affects our appetite-related hormones , and we opt for convenience foods, an increase in weight and/or the threat of obesity can increase the risk of diabetes.

Sleep and your Immune Function

As we sleep, we release growth hormones that trigger the proteins in our body to build new cells and repair damage. Therefore, small amounts of partial sleep deprivation can reduce natural killer cell activity, making us more vulnerable to colds and infections.

Sleep and Motor/Cognitive Performance

When we have a restless night or insufficient sleep, we expect to feel tired, irritable and sluggish, but few of us fail to realise the serious effects this has on everything we do.

If you drive while sleep deprived, this risk is comparable to that of someone who has an illegal blood alcohol level, yet 50% percent of drivers report driving while sleepy and 25% report falling asleep at the wheel, though not crashing. Approximately 5% of people have crashed while being drowsy.

The repercussions of sleep deprivation on safety, reliability, speed, accuracy, performance and productivity are abundant, yet still Government guidelines fail to highlight the importance of sleep.

Sleep and Longevity

One study has found that sleeping less than four hours per night was associated with a 2.8 times higher rate of mortality for men and a 1.5 times higher rate for women. The conductor of this study also found that sleep time is a better predictor of mortality than smoking, heart disease or high blood pressure.

"There's impressive evidence supporting the argument that the amount of time you sleep - even more so than whether you smoke, exercise, or have high blood pressure or cholesterol levels - could be the most important predictor of how long you'll live". (Steven Pratt, HealthStyle)

Are you getting enough?

There is no precise amount of sleep to recommend for everyone. The golden hours are between 11pm and 3am, but it is suggested we require seven to eight hours per night. If you do suffer from insomnia, consult your GP.

Women have a greater need for sleep than men, go to bed earlier and fall asleep quicker. However, they spend more time awake during the night and have generally poorer sleep quality.

How to Get a Good Night's Sleep

Create a 'Sleep Action Plan' that will help you relax for bedtime. A routine of relaxation will lower stress hormones and raise serotonin and other brain chemicals that initiate sleep. Follow the tips below and hopefully you'll wake feeling refreshed and invigorated.

  • Try to go to bed and wake at the same time each day.
  • Sleep in a cold, dark room. When your body temperature is cool, it is a signal to your body to sleep.
  • Relax in a warm bath an hour before bedtime.
  • Take regular exercise, but make sure you finish at least three hours prior to bedtime.
  • Minimize alcohol consumption. Although it may make you sleepy, it will not be a deep, restorative sleep and you are more likely to wake during the night.
  • Avoid caffeine eight hours before bedtime as it can stay in your bloodstream for 12 hours.
  • Don't go to bed too full or too hungry.
  • Complex carbohydrates such as whole-wheat bread boosts serotonin levels which in turn relaxes you and help induce sleepiness.
  • Drink some warm milk before bed. Dairy products contain trytophan, a natural sleep enhancer.
  • Avoid activating the brain before bed with television, loud music, computer games etc.

Obesity rates are rising to an alarming degree. Indeed, many people may have troubling weight issues. This could not so much be disturbing only in a cosmetic sense, but health-wise as well. When we look to the mind we find a prolific cause of sickness. Man thinks himself into ill health and disease.
